Learner Qualities

PublishingPageContent

At the start of 2014, BESS introduced Learner Qualities across the whole school focussing on 5 behaviours that enhance a student’s ability to learn. They are the life skills that are essential for success.  Students regularly refer to the Learner Qualities in class activities as they experience the learning pit and overcome challenges in the classroom.  It is imbedded in our school culture as we build lifelong learning skills within our students.

Persist

Learning takes time and does not happen immediately.  It takes a lot of energy and effort to learn.  We persist with our learning by sticking with it and trying again when we don’t get it right.

Inquire

When we inquire, we have the desire to know something.  We want to find out, reason about, reflect, ponder and work out where to next.  We are like a detective and we wonder and ask by thinking about our learning.

Regulate

It is important that through the learning process we can regulate our feelings and emotions.  We need to take control of our own actions and make sure that we stay in our learning zone.

Collaborate

When we collaborate, we pull everyone’s individual strengths together to accomplish a common goal.  We work jointly with others to accomplish an end.  Collaborating returns greater value than solo thinking as we learn best when we can discuss ideas with our peers.

Connect

In order for learning to be considered significant, it must connect to something the learner already knows.  Learning happens when the brain seeks out and finds patterns by linking new information to prior knowledge and experiences.
