At the start of 2014, BESS introduced Learner Qualities
across the whole school focussing on 5 behaviours that enhance a student’s
ability to learn. They are the life
skills that are essential for success. Students
regularly refer to the Learner Qualities in class activities as they experience
the learning pit and overcome challenges in the classroom. It is imbedded in our school culture as we
build lifelong learning skills within our students.
Learning takes time and does not happen immediately. It takes a lot of energy and effort to
learn. We persist with our learning by
sticking with it and trying again when we don’t get it right.
When we inquire, we have the desire to know
something. We want to find out, reason
about, reflect, ponder and work out where to next. We are like a detective and we wonder and ask
by thinking about our learning.
It is important that through the learning process we can
regulate our feelings and emotions. We
need to take control of our own actions and make sure that we stay in our
When we collaborate, we pull everyone’s individual
strengths together to accomplish a common goal.
We work jointly with others to accomplish an end. Collaborating returns greater value than solo
thinking as we learn best when we can discuss ideas with our peers.
In order for learning to be considered significant, it
must connect to something the learner already knows. Learning happens when the brain seeks out and
finds patterns by linking new information to prior knowledge and experiences.
